4 Ways To Get Chalk’d At Your Wedding

February 19, 2018

Instagrammable and Pinterest-worthy — that’s what wedding day chalk signage is all about! Whether you’re using chalk on a classic blackboard, an antique window pane, or rustic piece of rescued barn wood, hand-lettered signage is a fun way to add an artistic flourish and a photo op, while also relaying information to your wedding guests in a one-of-a-kind fashion. Here are four ways to use chalk to enhance your special day.

Relay Information

From the seating chart to the menu to a timeline for the day, there’s no end to information to relay to your guests on your wedding day. For a perfect mix of practical and pretty, try giving information in the form of a chalkboard sign! Chalkboard signs are a great way to welcome guests to the ceremony and reception, and are also ideal for way-finding. Consider including chalkboard signs throughout the venue directing guests to the ceremony, reception, and other key locations. Look for opportunities to use cute phrases like “Pick a seat, not a side, we’re all family once the knot’s tied!” for a fun spin on info-giving.

Invite Guests to Engage

More than just useful information, chalkboard signs can be used to invite guests to engage with your special day. Use a hand-lettered sign scrawled with “Share the love!” and your wedding hashtag, to encourage sharing on social media. Or, conversely, a sign that says “Welcome to our unplugged wedding!” is a kind way to tell folks to keep their cell phones out of sight and mind. Chalkboard signs can also invite friends and family to sign the guest book — “Leave your wishes for the bride & groom!” — or grab a drinks — “Cheers to the newlyweds!”

Decorate Your Day

Even while informing and inviting engagement, chalkboard signs are always doing double duty as décor. But there are certain ways to use chalkboards as a photogenic flourish first and foremost — mainly, with meaningful quotes. It might be a favorite bible verse, or a song lyric like “All you need is love.” Other favorite lines include: “Cheers to love, laughter, and happily ever after!” or “Eat, drink, and be married!” or simply “The adventure begins.”

Get Personal — And Professional

There are templates online for making your own chalkboard wedding signs, but it’s ideal to work with a hand-lettering professional. We spoke with the ladies at Chalk’d MKE, Daena and Sarah, to get their take on custom chalk’d designs. Their business actually grew from a custom-designed chalkboard, as Sarah was a bridesmaid in Daena’s wedding and had created a custom sign for the wedding party. The chalkboard was a hit, and the business blossomed from there. Daena says, “We meet with our clients in person, and together we create the vision for chalkboards that will be just right for the event. We love making our clients’ ideas come to life. One time, we had a couple with a globe as their wedding guest book. Sarah chalked their last name on it. Chalk can go beyond just boards!”
