Interview with the Experts | Photography | Behind the Lens
Finding the right photographer to capture your day is such an important element in your planning process, so we created “Behind the Lens” to give you a more in-depth look at each of our photographers!
Take a look below and get to know Memory Lane Photography!
How did you know you wanted to be a photographer? How did you go about starting out?
After becoming a mom, my passions and dreams really started running in full force. Watching my babies grow, I realized how essential it is to document important stepping stones of their lives. In my opinion, the wedding day is the first and foremost significant step in this journey. This is what gave me faith and determination to become a professional photographer. I built a photography portfolio showcasing my talents through friends and family. Thankfully for social media and my creative skills, word spread around quickly. In my first year of portfolio building, I met a local, professional wedding photographer who introduced me into the wedding world.
How long have you been in the business?
I started photographing weddings in 2016 as Memory Lane Photography by Jessica Lane. In my first year, I booked 16. Since then, I book about 20-25 weddings per year. However, I started building my business in 2015 and officially became a business in 2016.
What are the qualities that make a successful wedding photographer?
I am a creative and unique photographer. My talent lies in making my clients feel comfortable while I capture the candid and loving moments of their special day. I am blessed with encouraging enthusiast personality that goes above and beyond for your wedding day.
Why do you love photographing weddings and engagements?
I love documenting two people in love and sharing their journey as they enter this new chapter of life. Each couple and story are different from the next. I have the honor of freezing their moments and creating a photographic love story to treasure forever.
How has your photography (style) changed since you started?
My photography style has changed tremendously since I started due to personal growth and experiences. My posing and client experience have also grown into a whimsical collection of not just boring posed pictures. My creative eye has been trained to capture the candid, sweet and journalistic moments during the wedding day.
When choosing their photographer, what should a couple look for?
When choosing a photographer, make sure that your photography style and dreams fits their unique style!! Have clear communication and build a timeline that will cover ALL your wants and needs. Having a traditional church wedding? Book a photographer that has experience with church lighting + photography. If your planning an adventurous, wedding in the woods, book a photographer based on their adventurous whimsical wedding in the woods portfolio. If your style fits your desired photographer, then book! Don’t book someone based on their price. You get what you pay for!
Is there anything you wish couples would ask?
If pets can be included during their engagement or wedding day… the answer is YES!
How do you assist in keeping the wedding day running smoothly? Do you work hand in hand with the other vendors?
I ask my couples for their list of vendors before the wedding day. I get familiar with the venue and locations prior to the wedding day. We follow a timeline and stay on track. I make sure my couple’s give me a “Must Have List” of important family photos for the day. After the ceremony, I make sure all the generations and family formals are complete so the rest of the day can be creative, candid and focus on the bride + groom. When arriving to the wedding, I introduce myself to the vendors and we become friends! My FAVORITE part of the wedding day is the bridal portraits!
What is a typical wedding day routine for you?
Arrive to ceremony location, shoot details, getting ready images of bride + groom, first look (if interested), ceremony, family photos, bridal party photos, cocktail hour, grand march, cake cutting, dinner, first dances, and reception fun! (For the average 8-9 Hour Wedding Day) I also book custom wedding days (3+ hours), for the smaller more intimate wedding day.
