Jessica had been asking her now-husband Dan to buy her a baby goat for years. “They are so cute!” she gushes. Because of Jessica’s obsession, Dan always knew he wanted his proposal to include goats. In October of 2020, Jessica’s day started with a scavenger hunt planned by Dan that included a massage, a mani-pedi, Jessica’s favorite cocktail, a gorgeous bouquet of flowers, and, finally, a 5-course wine dinner at a local farm.
“During the main course, two goats came up to the table, dressed as a bride and groom! One had a box around its neck. I was told it was a present for me that I should open.” But it wasn’t a ring—it was a pair of diamond earrings. Just before dinner, the moment finally arrived. “Dan told me to open the card that was on the table. As I opened and started reading the poem Dan wrote, he got down on one knee. When I was done reading, he proposed.”
Dan and Jessica planned a rustic wedding for August of 2021. For both the ceremony and reception, the couple chose The Barn at Homestead Hollow in Germantown. Jessica found her gown at Bliss Bridal in Brookfield and landed on a color palette of plum, lavender, and grey.
When it came to bridal shows, Jessica attended the Bridal Expo at the Sheraton Milwaukee Brookfield with her sister, who was also her Maid of Honor. “We went pretty early after getting engaged. We didn’t even have a wedding date set at the time. I booked the DJ service there—we actually won their full-service DJ for free! We also booked Mama Bev’s St. Louis Butter Cakes for dessert.”
The ceremony was officiated by Jessica’s godmother and cousin. “It was so special to me. We also had a unity sand ceremony to include Dan’s 13 year-old daughter in the wedding.”
At the reception, dinner was a BBQ buffet and signature shots of the “Jessie Drop” and “Danny Apple,” which both were a big hit with guests. Looking back on the day, Jessica admits she would have highly considered having a day-of coordinator. “Having someone there to worry about the little things would have been great.”
“We had 10 goats on site for two hours for people to pet and take pictures with! It was awesome! We also had a photo booth and cornhole boards for people to sign as our guest book.” To prompt folks to sign the boards? A funny “Please sign our cornholes” sign.
“We absolutely LOVED Redd, the DJ and owner of Ring Tunes. She was very professional and on top of things, and she handled so much more than just the music. Her photo booth attendant was tons of fun, too!”
Jessica’s advice to future brides: “Lean on your bridesmaids and any other family and friends who are willing to help. Start planning early. Look and Pinterest and other websites for wedding to-do lists. There were so many things I found on those types of lists that I wouldn’t have even thought of!”
