Jill and Mike met through one of their favorite hobbies, disc golf. Jill and a mutual friend invited Mike to meet them for a round one day. After their friend left, Jill and Mike just kept playing. “We connected right away. A few days later, we had our first official date and have been together ever since.”
It was fitting that Mike eventually proposed on a disc golf course. It was Labor Day Weekend 2021, and Jill and Mike went up to Mike’s family cabin. The day they arrived, they decided to play some disc golf a couple hours north at Highbridge course. After playing one round, they decided to take a break, sitting on a bench overlooking the trees. “The view was spectacular,” Jill remembers. “Mike started getting emotional and telling me how much I meant to him.” He dug around in his golf bag and pulled out the ring. “I was ecstatic,” Jill says.
Mike and Jill planned a July wedding with a rustic, minimal theme and a dash of disc golf. Their colors were emerald green, wood tones, ivory and black. Jill found her Allure Bridal wedding dress at Bliss Bridal in Brookfield. “Since I’m almost 6’4″ I needed a dress that was going to be long enough for me,” Jill explains. “I tried on about 15 dresses. The dress I chose was the first one that really felt like me. I felt comfortable and so beautiful. It was the first and only dress that both the moms said WOW to when I came out of the dressing room. I knew that was the one when I got the response from them.”
Jill and Mike decided on an all-in-one ceremony and reception at Lilac Acres Farm. “We were able to get married, have the reception, and stay overnight at the same property.” Lilac Acres is chock full of thoughtful amenities that make for a wonderful wedding. The barn has air conditioning and heating for optimal comfort whatever the weather. They provide everything from tables and chairs to full bar services. The barn has maintained its rustic feel, but with updated amenities like real bathrooms. “It was just easy. And the chandeliers made it stand out, adding elegance to the rustic aesthetic.”
Before the ceremony, Mike and Jill did a first look. It’s one of the moments that sticks with Jill the most. “When we finally got to see each other all dressed up for the first time, it’s like all the weight from planning and suspense was released. We were able to take the nerves off each other and have this special moment that was just us.” Jordyn at Smoke Photography was there to capture the moment. The ceremony itself was more spiritual than religious, all about joining the two families together and being each other’s partner in life and on the disc golf course (for a little humor).
Following the ceremony, guests were able to easily move into the reception right on the Lilac Acres property. “We had passed apps, and guests were able to get drinks and socialize. We had a game of corn hole set up as well as a mini disc golf basket. As favors, we gave out mini disc-golf discs with our names on it, so people were able to grab them and play a mini game the whole night. It warmed our hearts that our guests were able to find a love of the game that brought us together.
From cocktail bites to dinner to dessert, All Occasions Catering provided it all. During cocktail hour, guests commented that the food was the perfect amount to tide them over. For dinner, Mike and Jill didn’t have guests choose a meat option. Instead, they served everyone a mixed-entree plate with a side that worked with both meats. There was lemon pepper chicken, a chipotle rubbed pork loin, sundried tomato rice, corn fritters, and a red bean puree. “It was light and flavorful. It was nice that everyone got the same thing.”
Because Mike isn’t too keen on dessert, they ended up doing a mixed dessert table. The guests loved it. “I know not everyone likes cake,” Jill says, “So we let people get what they wanted.” For their late-night meal, All Occasions served mini hot dogs and brats—a quick bite before folks hit the dance floor once more.
During dinner, Jill and Mike also got to enjoy one of their favorite parts of the day: a sweethearts table, just the two of them. “It was just us, so we got the chance to talk and focus on each other. It was nice to have that time. Even with everyone in front of us, we were able to sit together and enjoy our dinner and take in the moment. We had the chance to breathe and get excited for the next step into our future.”
