When it comes to your wedding, day-of beautification tends to be a no-brainer. Brides are all about professional hair and makeup to really shine their brightest when they walk down the aisle. But what about starting that process of self-care and radiance-boosting weeks, even months in advance of the big day?
If you’ve ever wanted to treat yourself to aesthetic services beyond makeup, there’s no better time than with your wedding on the horizon. Treatments from chemical peels to hair removal to fillers can all be found at a med spa near you. However, there are lots of med spa myths—like the cost of treatments, potential toxicity, or a service’s ideal client.
We spoke with Chloe Fischer, Marketing Director at Forward Healthy Lifestyles & Forward Medi Spa, to debunk 10 of these med spa myths:
While chemical peels are very effective at resolving skin imperfections, they also help maintain already-healthy skin. In other words, if you are satisfied with your skin’s appearance, chemical peels can be used to help prevent things like aging, clogged pores, dull skin, and uneven skin tone. Mild regular peels are a fantastic way to keep skin looking smooth, healthy, and hydrated.
Laser Hair Removal has been around now for over 16 years. In that time, there have been many advances in laser technology. Current laser technology can be used on any skin color or type.
Laser Hair Removal is an excellent bargain in terms of both time and money. If you calculate the cost of razors, shaving cream, and the time spent shaving or waxing over the years, you can easily spend more by not choosing laser hair removal! Not to mention all the unhappy moments of cuts, razor bumps, and skin irritation. By comparison, Laser Hair Removal only requires a handful of treatments to see a permanent reduction in hair. Problem solved, money saved.
Let’s get this rumor to bed, once and for all! No matter where it grows on your body, shaving does not cause hair to grow back thicker or darker. Many people think that shaving your legs or underarms causes thicker hair growth. This is false. It’s biologically impossible for hair to grow back thicker because of shaving. Shaving simply creates a blunt tip on the hairs, which many people interpret as greater thickness. When you dermaplane, you are removing very, very fine hair called vellus hair. This hair is so thin and soft that removing it with a dermaplaning tool will have little to no impact on how it looks when it grows back. After removing the vellus hair, your skin will instantly feel and look smoother and brighter. It will take about a week for the hair to grow back, at which time you can dermaplane again. Note: Keep in mind that dermaplaning is not the best option for those with facial hair caused by hormonal imbalance.
It’s true that micro-needling is an effective anti-aging treatment, but adults of any age can benefit from it. This treatment leaves skin glowing with smoothed skin texture, tone, and softness. Micro-needling can improve the look of acne and injury scars, hyperpigmentation, fine lines & wrinkles, and can even help diminish the appearance of stretch marks.
Not true! Medically, Botox is extremely safe. It has been and continues to be rigorously checked and regulated in addition to being a very common procedure nowadays. Although, yes, it is technically a toxin, it is used in tiny, diluted dosages and is only administered by professional, trained providers. In fact, to harm a human, it would take a very large amount (an illegal amount). Botox treatments are usually fewer than 100 units to put it into perspective. To cause severe harm it would take more than 3000.
Botox has other cosmetic applications, including lifting eyebrows, treating chin dimpling, softening the jawline, and improving mouth corners that have started drooping. Through increasing muscle tension and lowering the pressure on the nervous system, Botox has been used to treat migraines. It can also be used through injections in the armpits and forehead to treat excessive sweating. Botox is a famous and favorite anti-aging injection because of its proven efficiency and customer loyalty. Botox injections produce excellent results—safely and with little or no downtime.
Fillers are products used to replace the volume we lose in our faces as we age. If done carefully and with a good aesthetic sense, you will look rejuvenated and natural.
While it’s true that many fillers require multiple sessions for maximum efficacy, the frequency of maintenance isn’t as bad as most people think. It depends on such factors as the filler being used, where it is placed, and the activity level of the person receiving the filler. Speak with your aesthetician about filler upkeep before deciding it isn’t for you!
What’s most important regarding fillers is not the type of filler used. Rather, it is the skill, talent, aesthetic sense, and expertise of the practitioner administering the filler. The process is similar to commissioning a beautiful piece of art. The type of paint or clay being used is secondary. What’s paramount is the skill and vision of the artist.
