If you’ve been back-and-forthing on whether to include your dog in your wedding day, you already know the real answer. Of course you want them there. The question is how without adding stress, logistics, or one very muddy paw print on your dress. The answer…a pup concierge.

So we sat down with Piccola Pups, Milwaukee and South-East Wisconsin’s very own pup concierge, to find out exactly what they do, why couples hire one, and whether it’s worth it.

Spoiler: it absolutely is.

“Most couples don’t realize how much coordination goes into having a dog at a wedding. Someone has to be 100% focused on that pup the entire time — so everyone else can actually enjoy the day.”

So what exactly does a pup concierge do?

Think of them as a personal attendant…but for your dog. From the moment they pick up your pup to the moment they’re dropped off back home, every need is handled. That means transportation, getting them dressed and photo-ready, managing their energy during the ceremony and cocktail hour, and making sure they’re fed, walked, and happy throughout.

And critically: someone is always holding the leash. There’s no “can someone grab the dog?” moment. No distracted uncle accidentally letting them bolt toward the buffet. Just calm, professional care from start to finish.

Safe transport: Pickup and drop-off at any locations you choose — same or different spots, no problem.

Dressed & ready: They get your pup into their outfit and looking adorable for portraits.
Photo moments: An extra set of hands for the photographer — more good shots, less chaos.
Full care on-site: Potty breaks, feeding, walks, and calm handling throughout the whole event.

How the day actually flows

A pup concierge is typically needed for four hours during your special day. This gives enough time for transportation, photos, special moments and of course…a potty break and treat. Piccola Pups gives us a breakdown on what to usually expect:

Hour 1 — Pickup & prep:

Transport to the venue, feeding, a potty break, and a walk so your dog arrives calm and ready. Not frantic from the car ride.

Hours 2–3 — At the wedding:

Your pup is present for whichever moments matter most — the ceremony, portraits, cocktail hour. The concierge stays hands-on the entire time.

Hour 4 — Drop-off:

Another feed, potty break, and walk before transport home — or to a sitter, if that’s the plan. Pickup and drop-off can be different locations.

The planning side is part of it too

One thing that surprised us: the service starts well before wedding day. A good concierge walks through the full timeline with you during planning: where do you want the dog, for which parts, and how do they fit into the flow? They have tips for what works well (and what really doesn’t), and they’ll flag things like venue rules or timing conflicts you might not have thought of.

About one to two weeks out, there’s a meet-and-greet to go over final details and make sure the pup is comfortable with their handler before the big day. That familiarity makes a real difference in how relaxed the dog is on the day itself.

A few things worth knowing

It’s important to also make sure the service is fully insured and run by a team of pup parents and dog lovers, not just handlers, but people who genuinely love animals and it shows.

And for couples with multiple dogs? Totally doable.

Fun ideas to make your pup’s moment truly memorable

Beyond just “the dog walked down the aisle” here are some of our favorite ways couples have made their pup a real part of the story. Your concierge has seen it all, so don’t be shy about asking what’s possible.

Ring bearer

A tiny pillow, a barrel around the collar, or a little drawstring pouch tied to their bow tie. Guests absolutely lose it every time.

Matching outfits

A floral crown to match the bouquet. A bow tie in the wedding colors. A tiny veil. Coordinate the pup’s look with the wedding party and watch the photos become instant favorites.

First look with the dog

Before the big first look with your partner, do one with just your pup. The reactions are pure, genuine, and absolutely frame-worthy.

Cocktail hour cameo

Let the dog mingle during cocktail hour while guests are loose and happy. It’s chaos in the best way, and a great ice breaker for guests who don’t know each other yet.

Custom wedding tributes

Feature your pup’s face on favor tags, napkins, place cards, table numbers…you name it. Guests eat it up, especially when the dog is also physically present to compare.

Pup “program” insert

Add a little bio for your dog in the ceremony program; their name, role, fun facts. Guests read it while waiting and it sets a warm, personal tone before anything even starts.

Walk them down the aisle

Have a family member or member of the wedding party escort the dog down the aisle just before the bride. It’s a show-stopper, every single time.

At the end of the day, your dog is family. And having them present for one of the biggest moments of your life — actually present, not just technically there while someone stresses over logistics — is something you won’t regret. The photos alone will make you smile for decades.
