Lindsey and Austin went to high school together and started dating after they graduated. The two got engaged during a trip to Colorado with Austin’s family. They were all hiking through gorgeous scenery and waterfalls when Lindsey thought, “This would be the most beautiful spot for him to pop the question!” But the hike went on and Austin didn’t propose. “Then a fellow hiker told us about another waterfall that was higher up and more secluded, so we decided to go check it out.” When they reached the secluded waterfall, Lindsey became enamored with a little chipmunk nearby and tried to snag a photo. “I was so caught up with the chipmunk, I didn’t notice Austin was down on one knee behind me, ready to pop the question!” she says. “I finally turned around, and the rest is a blur. But it was the most perfect moment — on top of a mountain, under a waterfall.”
Austin and Lindsey planned a wedding with both the ceremony and reception at Cuvée in downtown Milwaukee. “We had a good friend officiate our wedding, and he kept the ceremony light and casual, with some jokes sprinkled in. He surprised us with a segment of the ceremony with anonymous quotes and advice from our closest family and friends, which we thought was really thoughtful, funny, and unique. He kept our ceremony interesting and laid-back, which was really important to us.”
Moving into the reception, Lindsey says the dinner speeches kept up that same laid-back feel. Dinner itself was catered by Saz’s and served buffet style. “The food was amazing! We had multiple people come up to us after, saying they’ve never had such good wedding food before.” To decorate the space, Lindsey tackled a number of DIY projects: “I made the table number flags, dyed silk ribbons for the bridal bouquets, painted our last name and wedding date on an old piece of barn wood, and wrote calligraphy on all of our chalkboard signs and seating charts. I also made huge three-foot-tall light-up marquee letters of our initials, and even crafted a clay replica of our dog, who couldn’t be there, to stick out of the cake!”
Lindsey and Austin say the overall vibe of their wedding was fun and relaxed. “I’ve never seen so many people on the dance floor at a wedding. We also had a photo booth set up later in the night, which was really a crowd favorite. We received a book with copies of all the pictures, which is such a great keepsake.” In the end, Lindsey says her favorite moment was during dinner, looking out at all of their family and friends. “I was thinking how lucky we are to have them all,” she says. “There was also a moment during dinner, when everyone was occupied with eating or talking to one another, and my husband and I got a minute to just look at each other — I’ll always remember feeling so emotional in that moment. It was unforgettable!”
