A Joyful Wedding Day Highlighted by Meaningful Touches and Family Moments.

How They Met

Katelyn and Joey met and started dating in 2014 while in Madrid, Spain for a study aboard program during law school. Even though they both came from New York City, they owe that time over seas to their meeting as in the states they were both attending different law schools and pursuing separate career paths.

While in Spain, they started out as friends traveling around Europe together during free time. They became so close that everyone around them assumed they were dating before anything actually took flight. To Katelyn’s surprise, Joey saw their friendship as something more and asked Katelyn out during a trip to London. Their first date took place when they returned to Madrid from that trip.

How They Got Engaged

After seven years together, often long-distance across multiple cities and countries, Katelyn and Joey got engaged over the phone during the end of the pandemic. At that time Joey was living in Oregon while Katelyn was in Brooklyn, NY. Both moving to Portland, Oregon in 2022 to finally be in the sample place!

The couple then eloped, just the two of them, at the Little White Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas in 2022 thinking they would soon plan a big ceremony and reception to celebrate with all of their family and friends. Plans changed a bit when they moved back to New York City in 2023 and had their son in 2024, this meant saving the big wedding for 2025!

The Planning Process

Wedding Date: August 9, 2025
Guest Count: 185
Wedding Style/Theme: Wedding Formal
Wedding Planner: événement – Manda Gill

What was the colors of your wedding?
The wedding party wore dark-navy gowns and black tuxedos. For the decor, they chose bright multi-colored florals to contrast with the stark white of the museum space with accents of periwinkle blue.

What was your favorite design element?
“Florals by far! The ‘kings table’ was striking, seating 40 in the center of the room with large, elevated arrangements and tons of candles. The surrounding round tables had small, elegant bud vases with really unique flowers and candle accents.

At the last minute, I (Katelyn) booked a wedding painter to paint portraits of the guests throughout the night. I once worked at a yoga studio where the owner intentionally bought high-end products for the studio (like luxurious hand soap), and once said offhand, ‘Isn’t the point to surprise and delight?’. That always stuck with me. In the same vein, we place scratch-off lottery tickets under the napkins for each guest to find ‘for richer or poorer.'”

Weddings Looks

Dress: Ceremony Dress – Watters Design; Reception Dress – Willowby by Watters. Both purchased at an Anthropologie bridal sample sale in New York City.
Bridesmaids Dresses:
Anthropologie – BHLDN
Menswear:
Groom – Suitsupply; Groomsmen wore black tuxedos from various vendors.

How many dresses did you try on?
“I tried on six dresses in April, ten in May, and finally 14 dresses in June (two months before the wedding!). Being postpartum, my body was still changing and I didn’t feel confident shopping or purchasing earlier. I eventually found my wedding dresses at an Anthropologie bridal sample sale in NYC. Being deeply discounted, I didn’t have to decide between my 2 favorite dresses – I bought both! I kept coming back to the two dresses I ended up buying. I wanted something a bit more dramatic for the ceremony, and something sleek and simple for the reception.

I tried on 14 dresses at the sample sale. The dress I wore for the reception was the first dress I grabbed off the rack – I then had to physically hold onto it for hours while I tried batches of other dresses! Being a sample sale, I couldn’t set it down, or it would have immediately been swept up by another bride. It was chaotic – you could only try on 3 items at a time, with 15 minutes max in the fitting room for each round. Despite the chaos, the staff and other shoppers were so lovely – everyone chimed in on which dresses looked best. It was still a really special experience!”

Ceremony Details

Location: Milwaukee Art Museum
Photographer: Lidia Sharapova of Seminomadic Photography

Ceremony Decor:
“Florals and candles from Flowers for Dreams.”

Ceremony Details and Favorite Moments:
“The ceremony was officiated by two close friends – one of the bride and one of the groom. They worked together for weeks, crafting their parts. We wrote our own vows which shared many happy tears and no shortage of laughs.

Our son Atticus (age 7 months) – the “best baby” – wore the cutest baby tuxedo, matching his father, and even had a real floral boutonniere. He was rolled down the aisle by the junior bridesmaid and ring bearer, in a decorated rolling baby seat. He then watched the whole ceremony front and center, gazing up at mom and dad, babbling at appropriate moments! That was by far the most special and memorable part, having him there.”

Reception Details

Location: Milwaukee Art Museum
Food & Drink: Milwaukee Art Museum
Dessert: Simma’s Bakery
Rentals: Tablescapes Event Rentals

First Dance Song: ‘At Last’ by Ella Fitzgerald

Why Did You Choose Your Venue:
“The Quadracci Pavilion at the Milwaukee Art Museum is one of the most iconic event spaces in Milwaukee. The juxtaposition of the stark white and soaring ceiling of the museum space against the blue of Lake Michigan and the sky is truly spectacular. It also seemed meant to be, as the architect, Santiago Calatrava, is Spanish (we met in Spain), and the space has many similarities to the Calatrava Oculus at the World Trade Center transportation hub in New York City (where we currently live).”

Reception Details:
“The ceremony, cocktail hour and reception all took place at MAM. The cocktail reception was originally supposed to be held outside overlooking the lake, but given the massive thunderstorm that started rolling in during the ceremony, it ended up being held indoors. The lightning illuminated the space throughout the night – it was really unexpected and beautiful. (This was the storm that had record rains and flash flooding – we had absolutely no idea it was coming!) The live band from North Coast Orchestra was also unforgettable and kept the guests dancing all evening.”

Looking Back

Three Words that Described the Day:
“Elegance, Joyful and Stormy (from the huge lightning and rain storm)”

What Vendors Impressed You the Most?
“Amanda Klein of Flowers for Dreams; Lidia Sharapova of Seminomadic Photography – every photo is gorgeous and she kept the day moving with the photo schedule; Eliza from SewWhatAndWhere in NYC – she tailored my two wedding dresses with a week’s turnaround, just 3 weeks before the wedding; Manda Gill from événement – expertly handled obstacles during planning and on the wedding day, we could not have pulled off this large wedding without her!”

What Moment Sticks With You the Most?
“The junior bridesmaid (8) and ring bearer (6) pulling our 7-month-old son down the aisle backwards in his rolling baby seat (decorated in sequined fabric) to the delight of the audience. A massive storm rolling in off of the lake during the ceremony and hearing each other’s vows.”

Special Tips or Advice to Future Couples?
“Do not plan a wedding freshly postpartum with a newborn at home. However, should you decide to, make them as big a part of the wedding as possible. If you choose to work with a wedding planner, get started as early as possible. Make yourself a schedule for when you need to finalize each part of the wedding planning. Even with a full-service planner, we still had to make so many decisions that we wish we had done earlier in the process. Send save-the-dates as early as possible! We sent ours only five months before the wedding, when some of our intended guests had already booked summer travel!”
