Maureen from Brookfield, Wisconsin, and Daniel from Kansas City, Missouri, met on their first day at Marquette University. They got engaged during a trip to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, to visit Daniel’s grandma. “Daniel grew up going there every summer—it’s one of his favorite places in the world.”
One morning, the couple went on a sunrise bike ride and Daniel’s grandma packed a breakfast picnic. “I thought nothing of it because that is exactly the kind of gesture she is constantly doing,” Maureen says. While enjoying their picnic and watching the alligators, Daniel got down on one knee and popped the question.
Daniel and Maureen planned a pre-pandemic wedding with a ceremony at St. Peter and Paul Church and a reception at Maureen’s family home. The home, Heather Heights Farm, is her parents’ now, but it’s also where Maureen’s mom grew up. “It is no longer a farm, but still has the farmhouse feel,” she says. Maureen’s parents also held their wedding reception at this house. “It was fun to carry on that tradition.”
The vibe of the wedding was one of natural beauty, with colors of hydrangea, navy, and greenery. To bring together all the moving parts of a wedding at home, Maureen and Daniel relied on événement as their wedding consultant. Maureen found her gorgeous gown (with a killer train!) at Bucci’s Bridal. Daniel’s suiting came courtesy of DuBois Formalwear.
A highlight of the church ceremony was the tribute to Daniel’s mother, who passed away when he was young. “One of the groomsmen, Colin, is a singer and musician. He played Daniel’s mom’s favorite song ‘Poems, Prayers, and Promises’ by John Denver.” Daniel and his maternal grandmother walked into the ceremony to this song, pausing together along the aisle just to listen to the music.
“It was emotional for everyone,” Maureen recalls. “I saw a brief peek through the window as I was holding my dad’s hand, but I had to look away—the tears were flowing!” Daniel and Maureen also included the Irish tradition of passing rings throughout family and friends, blessing them before the ring exchange.
What did the bride and groom love most about their reception? “Just being with all our family and friends!” They also particularly loved the dances, with live music by Velocity of ACA Entertainment. “Our favorite parts were our first dance and our last dance at the end of the night with everyone on the dance floor.” To really go out with a splash, the entire bridal party and lots of their friends all jumped into the pool at the very end of the night.
