How This Wisconsin Barn Venue Brought Moody Fall Wedding Dreams to Life

How They Met

Ally first moved to Wisconsin to attend Carthage College and made a few friends from Kenosha who lived off campus, these friends had a roommate named Cole. It was at Cole’s birthday when they met for the very first time. Unfortunately his birthday was in May, so right after meeting Ally moved 4 hours back home for the summer. The next fall, the friend group spent a lot of time hanging out together, but it took about a year for them to finally admitted they had feelings for each other.

How They Got Engaged

Cole planned a weekend in Chicago to propose at the Garfield Park Conservatory. He had organized with her parents to be a part of the surprise and get there early to watch the whole thing unfold. Unaware of his plans, Ally started walking in the opposite direction of the room they were supposed to be going to. As he urged her to finish taking pictures of a flower she was looking at, he noticed an entire bridal party walk into the room where he was planning to propose. Cole, now worried he would be taking away from someone’s actual wedding day, was glad Ally’s dad clued everyone in on the plan and the whole room erupted in cheer when he got down on one knee for her to say, YES!

The Planning Process

Wedding Date: October 11, 2024
Guest Count: 150
Wedding Colors: Olive Green, Terracotta, Rust and Gold
Style and Theme of the Wedding: ‘Moody Fall Vibes’

What was your favorite design element?
“Since The Bowery Barn makes such a statement on its own, a lot of thought and effort went into the incorporation of our wedding colors – how many colors to use, what fabrics for the dresses/suits, and how our florals could best complement everything and tie it all together. It was so fun to have the freedom to play around with the incorporation of color, from the icing on the cake and napkins on the table, to the floral arrangements on the arch and Ally’s green shoes (a pair for both the ceremony and reception!) that matched Cole’s green suit.”

Weddings Looks

Dress: Amelishan Bridal
Bridesmaids Dresses: Revelry

How many dresses did you try on?
“I went into dress shopping knowing that I had picky taste but that I also had no idea what I really wanted in a wedding dress. Initially, I went to two shops to get a feel for style, and a month later scheduled two more appointments (but cancelled one when I found my dress at Amelishan). I probably tried on around ~25-30 dresses total and didn’t expect to have “the moment,” especially after trying on so many. I saw my dress on the rack within 5 minutes of looking around, and both my mom and maid of honor later told me they noticed the dress too, but wanted to let me find it on my own. It wasn’t the first dress I tried on that day, but as soon as my stylist helped me into the gown in the fitting room, I teared up when I looked in the mirror. Everyone told me that my presence completely changed when I had the dress on, and when I tried it on for the second time before saying yes, my mom gave me a hug and told me that I was going to blow Cole away on our wedding day which was all the reassurance that I needed.”

Ceremony Details and Favorite Moments:
“We tried to make each segment of our ceremony unique by incorporating personal and memorable touches. We had our close friend officiate. Having someone we care about and who knows our relationship so well lead our ceremony will truly be a moment that lives with us forever. We were also intentional with the content of our ceremony by including readings (read by a bridesmaid and groomsman) that we felt reflected our relationship, took several moments to acknowledge our guests with a wave and group vow, read personal vows, and used songs that were meaningful to us. As we shared our first kiss, we had the DJ play the song “Married Life” from the movie Up, which gave us the feeling of a real-life movie moment.”

Why Did You Choose Your Venue:
“I first sent my mom a Facebook message of a random venue ad on January 1st, 2020 – 3 years before Cole and I had even gotten engaged – saying ‘Umm I want to get married here! – What do you think of my future wedding venue?!’ Once we were engaged, we toured 7 venues all over Wisconsin in 3 days. The third day was the only time Cole couldn’t join because of work, which was when we were seeing The Bowery Barn. The versatility of the venue truly stole the show. The outdoor ceremony space and backyard patio were perfect for a couple that loves to spend their time outside. The charming farmhouse, downstairs cocktail lounge, and the breathtaking barn spoke for themselves. Cole put his trust in me and told me if I truly felt it was the venue we were meant to get married at, then he believed in my judgment. Luckily, he was able to visit shortly after at The Bowery’s monthly open house tours and loved it just as much as I did.”

Reception Details and Favorite Moments:
“Our wedding was the 21st wedding we attended together and if one thing remained the same, it’s that we LOVE a good dance floor. We wanted our reception to be a big dance party with our loved ones. We chose a schedule to get the night flowing with our first dance/cake cutting, listened to speeches while finishing up dinner, and passed on other traditions like the garter/bouquet toss and anniversary/line dances. Most of our guests would probably agree that “The Helmet” was the most unique part of our reception. Aptly named, this refers to a fire helmet born from a Kenosha Fire Department tradition that is brought out during events that signify change, such as fire academy graduation, weddings, etc. Wedding guests who were firefighters were invited to join the group of Kenosha firefighters on the dance floor while Cole’s captain gave a speech about the fire service, his personal connection with Cole, and welcomed Ally as an official member of the KFD family. He even acknowledged Ally’s dad as a retired firefighter and invited him to join in on the ceremony. The Helmet had a metal plaque bolted to the outside engraved with “Kuebler Fire, October 11th 2024.” The inside is lined with a 64oz plastic bowl that gets refilled with a cocktail throughout the evening, and Ally was invited to take the first drink followed by Cole and the rest of the Kenosha firefighters present. The only rule was that if you were handed the helmet, you couldn’t set it down and it had to be passed along to someone else. Needless to say, this was quite an unusual sight for most guests and made for many laughs and memories from the evening, while also honoring a significant part of Ally and Cole’s life.”

Looking Back

Three Words that Described the Day:
“Joyous, Sincere and Sentimental”

What Moment Sticks With You the Most?
“Reading personal vows during the ceremony. We were both anxious to do so, but knew in our hearts that we wanted to share our love with family and friends. Guests traveled from 11 different states to be at our wedding, so it’s not often that we get to have all of our loved ones in one place… much less with the purpose of celebrating us and our love. There was not a dry eye that afternoon and many of our guests let us know how much they appreciated hearing the thought and effort we put into writing our vows. As a final touch, we both felt it was right that we incorporate a group vow and asked our guests for their commitment of continued love and support as we began our marriage with them that day.”

Special Tips or Advice to Future Couples?
“Ultimately, the core of wedding planning is a reflection of your relationship. Always keep what defines ‘you’ as a couple and at the center. Don’t be afraid to stray from the norm or add personal touches, even if they may be regarded as ‘unconventional’ or you haven’t seen it done before! What better way to make your wedding memorable!? With this mentality, we truly felt like we honored and celebrated what it means to be Ally & Cole on our wedding day.”
