Shelby and Cole met through a mutual friend and have been together for 10 years. One Christmas, Shelby had gone to Florida to spend the holiday with her grandmother, and after a chaotic day traveling home, Cole and Shelby’s parents met her at the airport. Cole told Shelby, prior to her return home, that he was going to give her a surprise of where their next trip would be. “At the airport, Cole handed me a letter to read, and he worked really hard to convince me to open it right away,” Shelby says.
“The letter ended with ‘Will you take this trip called life with me?’ And Cole got down on one knee!” To top it off, the piano player at the airport was playing the wedding march. And upon turning around, Shelby was greeted by two of her best friends, her aunt, uncle, brother, Cole’s uncles, grandparents, and more. “They had all been hiding behind newspapers and chairs! My best friends even recorded the entire proposal.”
Cole and Shelby went for a simplistic, classy wedding with a touch of modern-rustic flair. The ceremony was held at St. Anthony’s on the Lake, the parish where Shelby grew up and has also worked. “Having worked with Father Tony, we knew it would be very special for him to officiate our wedding. We made sure to book him two years in advance!” The two cherished saying their vows the most, but Shelby also says, “I’ll never forget Cole’s face when I walked down the aisle, and I’m so glad that our photographer Kara Reese Photography captured it.”
The reception took place at Pano’s Banquet Center in Brookfield. For dinner, catered by Pano’s, there was chicken piccata, beef tenderloin, and vegetarian pasta, plus chicken tenders were on the menu for the kids. For dessert, Shelby and Cole chose pie pockets, Cole’s grandmother’s recipe for cookie bars, gluten-free cupcakes for the gluten-free guests, and everything was paired with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. “Cole and I cut from a 12-inch apple pie,” says Shelby. “We chose pies and cookie bars because we aren’t the biggest fans of cake and wanted to go to outside the box with our dessert choices. People loved it!”
One of Shelby’s favorite things she planned for the wedding was a gift of cufflinks for Cole. “There was a photo of him and his grandpa on one, and on the other it said ‘Always my best man.’ His grandpa had passed away early on in our relationship and was one of Cole’s best friends. I knew that if he had been there, he would have been Cole’s best man, so I know Cole really enjoyed those cufflinks.” As for the most memorable moment of the day, Shelby says: “Looking around during dinner and thinking how amazing it was to have everyone we loved in one room to celebrate our new life.”
